Celeste

"Small Town with a Big Heart."

Celeste is a small community with a lot of history and was established in 1898, incorporated in 1900. We have always had a bank and a post office with a current population of 817.

This is truly the place where the buffalo roamed. There is a large herd of buffalo just west of town. The buffalo are moved from one side of FM 1562 to the other for grazing. They are located about 5 miles west of town.

This is also the home of Audie Murphy the most decorated War Hero from WWII. He went to school here and came back to visit us many times before his untimely demise in 1976 in his private plane. He had also starred in 40 movies, one depicting his story in the war-"To Hell and Back". You can visit the Audie Murphy Memorial Park on S US 69.

Celeste was started by the Sante Fe railroad and was named after the Vice President of the railroad's daughter. We now have the Sante Fe Hike & Bike Trail where the tracks went through town. At one time it was a very busy and exciting community. We even had a college at one time. With time things have changed. We now have 3 leather shops, a sound studio, a quilt store, a feed store, dry cleaners, miscellaneous stores, and 2 convenience stores.

Other notable citizens include a famous Barrel Racing Champion and Mack Harrell (1909-1960), a baritone singer who sang with the Metropolitan Opera from 1939-1960.
